Electric scooters have become quite popular globally since they present an efficient, environmental-friendly, and economical alternative for urban commuting.

E-scooters present an easy and fun way of getting around the city or a park.

In addition to being a healthy means of urban transportation, electric scooters are convenient, highly portable, easy to store, and a fun way of commuting without the hassles of getting stuck in traffic jams or overcrowded streets.

Thanks to their increasing popularity, electric scooters have become more affordable.

With a budget of less than £300, you can get excellent e-scooters that will streamline your commute. The under £300 price category encompasses entry-level scooters, but riders need to manage their expectations regarding quality and value.

Scooters in this price range are designed for short-distance commuting or as joy cruisers.

As such, they generally come with basic features such as an average motor and battery. More recent releases carry impressive highlights such as enhanced aesthetics, waterproofing, enhanced range, and increased hill climb ability.

Regardless of the features, your best electric scooter should meet your specific needs and budget. Here are the nine best electric scooters to consider if your budget is under £300.

Summary of the GoTrax GXL V2

The GoTrax GXLV2 is an improved version of GoTrax’s earlier version, the GXL.

It is an ideal commuter scooter with excellent build quality and average performance. It integrates an ergonomic design which makes it safe and enjoyable to ride. While it’s not designed for long-distance commuting, the GXLV2 is a perfect last-mile solution after you alight from the bus or train.

It’s suitable for scooter beginners who don’t want to break the bank to acquire a valuable and convenient commuting companion.

The GoTrax GXLV2 comes with a 250W motor which propels the scooter to a top speed of 15.5 mph.

The 36V5.2AH Extended Range Lithium-Ion Battery offers a range of between 9 and 12 miles and recharges in under 4 hours, meaning you don’t have to wait for long for your scooter to recharge.

The scooter comes with a handy 2-speed setting that allows you to either use the first gear to achieve a top speed of 10 mph or engage the second gear to reach the 15.5 mph top speed-all dependent on your riding experience.

The scooter lacks a zero start; thus, riders need to kick-start it to engage the motor.

You can alternate between speed modes using the red power button, while riders can engage cruise control via the right-located, ergonomically designed thumb throttle.

The thumb throttle performs excellently for a scooter in this price range, allowing for easy engagement. The GXLV2 can tackle inclines of up to 14 degrees and can comfortably accommodate riders weighing up to 220 lbs.

While it lacks suspensions, the 8. 5″ pneumatic tyres absorb much of the impact, offering you a comfortable ride.

The left handlebar houses the hand-operated brake.

The GXLV2 brakes easily, and this is precisely attributed to the dual-braking mechanism- a disc braking and a regenerative ABS anti-lock braking system for an efficient, responsive braking effect.

This also speaks to the scooter’s energy efficiency as the kinetic braking power is used to recharge the battery, thereby extending the range. Better still, the built-in cruise control allows you to adjust the speed based on your experience and prevailing conditions for better stopping.

The scooter is constructed with a lightweight aerospace-grade aluminium alloy material.

Thanks to the lightweight frame, weighing only 27 lbs. (12 Kg), the scooter is highly portable. It folds down easily and locks for seamless portability and storage.  The folded dimensions are an impressive 99 cm by 43 cm by 36 cm.

The 18.6’’ by 6’’ deck is embedded with a rubber textured footplate to enhance the overall ride comfort and stability. Unlike its predecessor, the GXL, the GXLV2 features an upgraded fender that does not break.

The handlebars are very basic, striking a balance between ergonomic functionality and the most essential features needed on a budget electric scooter.

You’ll be impressed by the digital display, which allows you to watch its speedometer, headlight, and battery life.

The design is minimalistic in nature, with details that are well thought out. Unlike many scooters today, the scooter avoids unnecessary knobs, switches, and levers that give the finished product a crowded feel.

It also offers safe, low-light riding due to the ultra-bright headlight and rear reflector that improve visibility. It also features a bell located on the left side of the handlebar that riders can easily ping with the left thumb. You can find the scooter in matte black, pink, or silver.

Is the GoTrax GXL V2 Value for Money?

Absolutely yes! Affordable does not necessarily equate to saving on cost at the expense of shoddy workmanship.

With prices starting at less than £295, the GXLV2 is an absolute bargain, bridging the gap between quality and cost.

It boasts excellent features, a top build quality, standard performance, and outstanding highlights such as cruise control, 2-speed modes, and intuitive LED display. It’s an excellent scooter if you’re looking to streamline your last mile commute without breaking past £300.

Who is the GoTrax GXL V2 Suitable for?

The GoTrax GXLV2 is  fantastic value scooter for beginners and experienced riders alike. It’s an all-around scooter suitable for older teens, commuters, and older riders looking to enjoy fun rides or streamline their last-mile commute or more.

Summary of the Kugoo ES2

The Kugoo ES2 has been described as the SUV of electric scooters owing to its rigid build and incredible performance.

The scooter comes in an exquisite and reasonably aggressive unrivalled design with an easily noticeable large deck and a pretty simple steering rack. The thick, sturdy aluminium alloy frame coupled with a massive 7.5Ah battery located underneath the decks gives it additional weight but makes the scooter feel incredibly solid and stable.

The Kugoo ES2 offers superior performance thanks to the 350W motor that offers stable and strong power to ascend steep roads with an inclination of up to 15 degrees.

The motor propels the scooter to a top speed of 15.5 mph (25Km/h), which is fairly average for entry-level scooters. Besides, it comes with 3 level adjustable speed settings to meet your speed preferences.

The 36V, 7.5Ah battery offers an impressive range of 15 miles (25Km). The battery takes 4-6 hours to charge fully. You can change the speed settings and battery voltage via the app for an even further range.

In terms of ride quality, the ES2 offers a comfortable riding experience on a typical urban terrain achieved using a wide pedal, front shock absorber, and 8.5 inch solid honeycomb-patterned tyres. Both the tyres and the front shock absorber do a good job in cautioning riders from gravel, bumps, and other road debris.

Better still, the 8.5-inch honeycomb tyres are immune to flats and require minimal maintenance.

While it is not designed for off-road use, the ES2 offers a satisfactory performance on dirt and compacted gravel roads, though you’ll still feel the road impacts.

Besides that, riding the scooter is straightforward, and you won’t need any form of prior training.

The controls are pretty simple to use and are within easy reach. You can use the accompanying app to engage either a zero-start for minimum effort or push-start based on your riding experience.

The Kugoo ES2 is safe to ride owing to the advanced braking system consisting of a front e-brake and a physical disc brake on the rear wheel.

While you can use both simultaneously, it’s recommended that you use mostly the mechanical rear brake, especially when descending downhill or when riding at higher speed.

In addition to the effective braking system, the scooter’s honeycomb tyres offer wet traction, grip, and control, making the rides stable and safe. The headlights consist of a wide array of bright LEDs.

Coupled with the LED strip embedded on the side of the chassis, it makes the scooter safe to ride at night. There’s an additional tail/brake light on the rear fender.

Kugoo ES2’s standard weight and a fast-folding design make it highly portable. Its folding design is captivating. You can fold the scooter in two easy steps and carry it on a bus or train.

Besides, once folded, the scooter is compact and space-saving; therefore, you can easily store it in your home, office or sit with it next to you on the bus or train. The screw-on handlebar ends facilitate further portability, as riders can completely detach them to compact the folded size further.

Other notable highlights of the ES2 include LED display indicating speed, battery power, and distance travelled, built-in USB port with the ability to power other mobile devices, dedicated Android/iOS App with Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and IPX4 water resistance.

Is the Kugoo ES2 Value for Money?

Available under £300, the Kugoo ES2 is an absolute bargain. It’s fast, stable, pretty powerful, portable, and packs impressive highlights, including a dedicated App, USB charging port, and 3-speed modes with cruise control.

With a 450W motor & 10″ tyres, the Hover-1 Alpha is a powerful electric scooter available on a  budget. It’s the fastest and most powerful entry-level scooter and gives high-end models a run for their money.

red  The air-filled tyres puncture easily

red  Low range

red  Average brake performance

Summary of the Hover-1 Alpha

The Hover-1 Alpha electric scooter may be a budget scooter, but it comes with enormous power and speed.

The scooter’s design features quality workmanship with a hard and durable frame that can carry riders weighing up to 264 lbs. (120 Kg).

The scooter features a beautiful design with soft edges and a relatively expansive standing deck that’s covered with grip tape whose support is excellent, even when wet or dirty.

The scooter comes with a solid steering bar with quality ergonomically shaped rubber handles for superior grip and control. An LCD screen at the centre of the handlebar indicates the speed, riding mode, battery status, cruise control function, and headlight status.

The Hover-1 Alpha is fitted with a 450W brushless motor-the most powerful motor in the Hover-1 range of electric scooters. It has a top speed of 18 mph (28.96 km/h).

It’s diligent to note that actual world tests have put the maximum speed at 21 mph, but the speedometer does not accurately relay speed stats past the stated 18 mph top speed.

The thumb throttle responsible for acceleration is a little stiffer than most, and riders need to exact an unusual amount of pressure to gain steady acceleration. Cruise control is attained by clicking the throttle twice in quick succession.

The scooter is powered by a 36V/ 6Ah 2272 certified 30 cell Li-ion battery pack with a maximum range of only 12 miles (19.3 Km), i.e., 40 minutes of continuous riding.

This range is a little underwhelming for the price you pay. The battery fully recharges in under 6 hours which is pretty average and can last about 5 000 charge cycles, after which you’ll need to replace them for maximum performance. 5000 cycles are equivalent to a lifetime of five years-a fairly long period of normal use.

The scooter offers a smooth ride experience thanks to the larger 10″ inflatable tyres that provide a good level of shock absorption from bumps and rough terrain.

This is an excellent addition as this scooter, like most scooters in this budget range, lacks suspension. Better still, the large wheels combined with the powerful motor enable users to tackle rugged terrains and curbs with unmatched ease.

Riders are also able to choose between two ride modes; standard and sport. The speed is capped at 12 mph on standard mode, which is mildly underwhelming for the motor size on this scooter.

In terms of portability, the Alpha weighs 36.16 lbs (16.4 kg), which is quite heavy.

Nonetheless, it’s still possible to carry the scooter with a bit of intentional effort if you need to get into public transport or take a flight of stairs. Besides, the scooter folds down to a highly compact package thanks to its quick folding mechanism.

It consists of a quick release latch that you can easily raise or lower when you want to fold/unfold it. Once folded, riders can conveniently store the scooter in restrictive spaces at home or in the office.

The scooter features a single braking system that is a hand-activated rear disc. The brakes will bring the scooter to a smooth stop.

However, riders have complained about it having an average stopping power, with a longer stopping distance than is considered ideally safe. Additional safety is seen in the presence of a high mounted LED headlight, standard flashing tail light, and side positioned red reflectors. There’s also a horn for the unwitting jogger or kid on the riding trail.

In addition to the above features, the Hover-1 Alpha has impressive highlights, including a built-in Bluetooth speaker for music on the go, a retractable kickstand, and under deck lighting.

Is the Hover-1 Alpha Value for Money?

Absolutely yes! The Hover-1 Alpha offers great value for money.

With a powerful 450W motor, no entry-level scooter matches the powerful performance on this monster. What’s more, the scooter is compact, lightweight, and highly foldable, making it quite beneficial.

Added perks like the Bluetooth speaker, elegant design, reliable 10’’ tyres are exactly what sets it apart from other scooters in this price range.

Who is the Hover-1 Alpha Suitable for?

The Hover-1 Alpha is suitable for intermediate riders and seasoned riders alike.

It’s moderately powerful, making it an ideal scooter for riders with some form of experience in scooting. The Alpha can be an excellent scooter for individuals who need a casual electric scooter for short commutes within an urban setting.

red  Not the best at climbing hills.

red  No suspension

Summary of the GoTrax XR Ultra

The GoTrax XR Ultra is yet another fantastic budget scooter boasting a simple design with impeccable highlights.

You will be impressed by the folding hooks, ergonomic grips, fast acceleration, and impressive braking power. We take a look at the scooter’s frame, which is constructed from aluminium alloy, making it more durable and resistant to wear and tear.

The non-retractable handlebars are ergonomically designed, featuring textured rubber handles, a right acceleration throttle, and a left brake lever. They also host an LED display embedded at the centre, adding to the scooter’s modern flair and a bell for safety.

The XR Ultra offers standard performance but is a fantastic upgrade to GoTrax’s GXLV2. It features a 300W motor with a peak power of 430W.

The motor propels the scooter to a top speed of 15.5mph (25 km/h), which is just standard among most budget scooters.

The scooter reaches top speed in an impressive 7.8 secs thanks to the robust acceleration, but this is reliant on the rider’s weight, the track conditions, and the weather.

The scooter is strong enough to tackle inclines of up to 12 degrees, but the top speed will reduce to a mere 8 mph when riding uphill.

Unlike other electric scooters in this category, the GoTrax XR Ultra comes with the premium 252 WH, 36 V LG Lithium-ion battery that delivers 17 miles of travel per single charge.

The battery boasts a stellar Smart Battery Management System that comes in handy to protect it against short-circuiting, overcurrents, over-charging, and overheating, thus ensuring durability.

The battery is fast charging, attaining a full charge in around 3-4 hours. Considering that the scooter’s impressive range translates to roughly 4 hours of ride time, the short charging time is a real value-add.

Riders also get to choose between two-speed modes; 1, which reaches a max speed of 9mph, and 2, achieves the top speed.

The XR Ultra’s high-torque can handle up to 220lbs and offers a pretty comfortable ride. The 8.5″ pneumatic tyres compensate for the lack of suspension, providing extra traction for a smooth ride on averagely bumpy terrain.

However, in extremely uneven terrains such as off-road conditions, you’ll surely feel the vibrations. The XR Ultra’s tyres are best for riding on pavements and smooth asphalt roads. Ride quality is further enhanced by the spacious 6.6’’ wide deck, which is also specially elongated (19’’), comfortably accommodating both feet facing forward at an angle.

Besides, the deck is embedded with anti-slip rubber grip material for enhanced stability while riding. The deck also has a 4’’ clearance to allow for soft hops off short curbs.

Like most electric scooters in this price category, the XR Ultra comes with a dual braking system that combines a front regenerative brake and a rear mechanical disc brake.

This combination ensures that you come to a quick and smooth halt when needed. In fact, in its category, the XR Ultra is said to arguably possess the most stopping power, with an incredibly short stopping distance of 14.9 feet (4.5M).

Other high-end models mainly apply the brakes to a single wheel, unlike the Ultra, where the braking system involves both wheels, resulting in this ultra-responsive and powerful braking.

Considering that the brake is hand-operated, it’s very easy to engage. The braking lever on the handlebar is relatively easy to pull, and the brakes execute silently.

The XR Ultra is safe to ride at night thanks to the high-mounted, ultra-bright headlight (8.5° radiation angle, 26 ft radiation distance) and reflectors for enhanced visibility. GoTrax could maybe have included a red tail light, but they sell that as an accessory add-on.

The XR Ultra is highly portable owing to its low weight (24.6 lbs) coupled with the one-step folding system for seamless portability.

Once folded, the scooter doesn’t occupy much space and can easily fit in the boot of your car or tiny corner spaces in your home or office.

The scooter also features a unique red safety button that protects the scooter from folding while riding and locks in the stem to avoid wobbling. To avoid misplacing the safety pin, the scooter’s safety pin is built into the folding system.

The GoTrax XR Ultra is indeed a top contender for the best budget e-scooter. Other impressive highlights in the scooter include cruise control, IP54 water resistance rating, a bell, and a kickstand for hassle-free parking.

Is the GoTrax XR Ultra Value for Money?

Sure enough! The XR Ultra offers great value for money, outperforming other scooters in its price bracket, as well as a handful of more expensive models.

Impressive range, premium LG battery, dual-braking system, durable build,  pneumatic tyres, robust folding system, cruise control, among other features, more than justify the scooter’s price point.

Who is the GoTrax XR Ultra Suitable for?

The GoTrax XR Ultra is best for novice scooter riders looking to explore the world of electric scooters either for fun or to streamline their last-mile commute.

Its build quality, portability, and other features make it a fun commuting scooter. It offers an average top speed, which is safe enough for budding young riders but thrilling sufficient for the occasional fast cruise.

  • Scooter Weight 27.5 lbs (12.47Kgs)
  • 300W Brushless Motor
  • Range 17 miles (27.3 Km)

Summary of the Hiboy NEX3

The Hiboy NEX3 is a decent scooter from the NEX line of electric scooters by Hiboy.

It effortlessly fits among the best entry-level electric scooters, such as the GoTraxx GXL V2 and the Xiaomi Mi M365. The scooter is constructed with an aluminium alloy which makes it rigid without increasing the overall weight.

This feature also makes riding easier and safer. The sleek design is complemented with the black matte full metal body, which gives it a premium vibe.

One easily noticeable design is the longer deck, which enhances stability and provides ample room for both feet.

The design features reinforced fenders with brackets and reinforced aluminium frames. The scooter’s overall design is both eye-catching and practical.

The Hiboy NEX3 is powered by a 350W motor which is quite powerful, considering the price.

The scooter achieves a maximum speed of 16 mph (25.7 Km/h) and can climb inclines up to 15 degrees with ease. The scooter comes with an internal 36V/7.5AH lithium-ion battery with a range of up to 16 miles on a single charge and a battery charge time of 6 hours.

The scooter is comfortable to ride thanks to the extended-standing area and advanced 8.5 ” anti-slip solid tyres.

However, owing to the lack of suspension, you’ll still feel some vibrations when riding the scooter, especially on slightly uneven roads. The scooter is ideally designed to ride on very smooth paved roads with minimal bumps, cracks, and obstacles.

Talking about safety, the scooter comes with a dual braking system encompassing a front electronic brake with ABS and a rear disc brake.

The left brake lever slows down the scooter while the right brake brings it to a complete halt. The combination of the two braking mechanisms makes riding the scooter safe and avoids sudden stops that can easily throw riders over the handle.

With a total weight of 29.76 lbs (13.50 Kg) and a one-step folding mechanism, the Hiboy NEX3 is highly portable and can be carried with one hand. The folded scooter is compact, allowing for easy storage.

While folding and unfolding the scooter is relatively easy, it’s not as smooth as other electric scooters in the same price range. Riders have to manually adjust the latch to lock and unlock the stem from the rear fender when folding down the scooter.

Nonetheless, you’ll still be able to fold the scooter in 3 seconds. Besides, it fits nicely in any boot or tight space when folded.

The scooter is equipped with a low-mounted, bright front light, a rear brake light, and several side reflectors for night visibility, keeping you safe at night.

The LED display mounted on the handlebar stem keeps riders aware of the battery charge, speed, and headlight status. The power button serves to power on and off the scooter, while double pressing it turns on the headlight. The scooter also has an IPX4 waterproof rating.

Overall, the Hiboy NEX3 is a decent scooter with average features, perfect for its price point.

It, however, lacks modern additions such as Mobile App and Bluetooth connectivity which techies well appreciate and expect to have.

Is the Hiboy NEX3 Value for Money?

The NEX3 is a great scooter, especially when comparing the price to other similar models.

A powerful motor, a more extended deck, a dual braking system with ABS, a long-range battery, and a one-step folding mechanism are all high-value features that this scooter delivers.

However, considering that the scooters in the same range have more impressive highlights, you’ll want to consider your choices.

Who is the Hiboy NEX3 Suitable for?

The Hiboy NEX3 is for teenagers and adults alike, weighing less than 200 lbs (90 Kg).

The scooter is ideal for individuals looking for a budget electric scooter for commuting or individuals simply looking for a joyride.

The Macwheel MX Pro is an incredible scooter- a faster, stronger, and better version of its direct predecessor, the Macwheel MX1.

The scooter’s frame features a sleek and simple design made of aluminium alloy, with rubber, steel, and plastic finishing, giving it a modern vibe.

The MX Pro is powerful with a dynamic 350W brushless motor that propels the scooter to a top speed of 15.5 mph under optimum conditions.

It also has 3 gear modes, for rider-preferred speeds, with a cruise control option. The motor is placed in the front wheel and boasts 10 degrees climbing grade, which is relatively low compared to other entry-level scooters such as the Xiaomi Mi M365 and the GoTrax XR Ultra.

The scooter is fitted with an improved 360Wh 36V/10Ah high-capacity (with Smart Battery Management System) Li-ion battery, which is the largest among the sub-£300 scooters reviewed here.

While the battery is quite large, it’s incredible how it doesn’t add weight to the scooter, which weighs a solid 28.35 lbs. (12.86 Kg).

The high-capacity battery achieves an incredible max range of 25 miles (40.23 km).  25 miles travel range means that you can ride from San Francisco Bay to Marin City on a single charge-just amazing.

Solid tyres, almost by definition, significantly worsen the ride experience and stability.

Macwheel MX Pro scooter lacks suspension and is fitted with 8.5’’ foam-filled tyres, which means that the scooter is not going to give you the most comfortable ride experience.

Being relatively new to the electric scooter market, we’d assume that Macwheel needs a little figuring out to do. However, the scooter’s deck is pretty spacious and embedded with anti-slip material for greater stability when riding.

Like most scooters in this price category, the Macwheel MX Pro comes with a dual braking system.

The scooter has a front EABS anti-lock braking system and rear disc-brake for enhanced braking power making the scooter effectively safe. The anti-lock braking design significantly enhances safety, especially on slippery surfaces or roads.

Weighing only 12.7Kgs, the MX Pro is highly portable. It also integrates a one-step folding mechanism for easy portability.

You can seamlessly fold the scooter with ease in 3 seconds. Better still, the folded scooter is compact thus occupies minimal space. The handlebars on this scooter are screw-ons, and therefore,  can be unscrewed to enhance foldability further.

As such, it can be carried on public transportation or conveniently stored in a car boot.

The handlebar stem houses a bunch of controls. An intuitive LED display, centrally placed, keeps riders aware of the battery level, speed, and Bluetooth connectivity. The handbrake is located on the left lever, alongside the bell.

Alternately the throttle is located on the right. The handle grips are rubberized for a firm hold.

Compared to most entry-level electric scooters, the Macwheel MX Pro is technologically advanced, coming with a dedicated app, i.e., MX Pro App. The mobile app allows you to check the scooter’s speed, battery life and control the headlight right from your smartphone.

Besides, you can lock & unlock your e scooter from your smartphone thanks to app control technology.  It connects to your phone via Bluetooth.

The scooter is safety-centric with a headlight, brake light, and reflectors.

The power button turns on the headlight while clutching on the brakes initiates the flashing motion of the red LED brake lights. It also features an IPX4 rating for light showers and puddle splashes.

Overall, the MX Pro is a great low-budget electric scooter with an incredibly long range and still highly portable.

It’s an excellent agile travel tool for urban use.

Summary of the Razor E Prime Air

Designed for commutes or a casual way to get around, the Razor E Prime Electric Scooter is well constructed and relatively affordable as far as e-scooters go.

Built with quality materials, the E Prime Air features a durable aluminium frame, 5-stage LED battery indicator display, aluminium fork, and handles made from soft moulded rubber.

Overall, the scooter combines modern design with excellent craftsmanship, making it stand out among mid-range scooters.

The Razor E Prime Air Electric scooter is fitted with a 250W motor which maxes at 15 mph (24.14 Km) in terms of speed and can travel a distance of up to 7.5 miles on a single charge.

The scooter is powered by a 36V lithium-ion pack that lasts for about 40 minutes of continuous use.

The battery fully charges in about 3.5 hours which is pretty fast considering the range.

The charging port is placed under the deck and features a waterproof jacket to prevent electrical issues from water splashes.

The scooter also features a five-stage, multicoloured battery indicator placed right beside the folding mechanism, where you’ll also find a power button. The LED battery indicators let you know how much juice you have left as you ride.

The E Prime Air accelerates quietly and whirls at full speed, giving a gliding feel.

The scooter offers a decent ride quality owing to the 8” pneumatic front tire and 8” airless, flat-free rear tyre that rolls easily, offering a smooth ride.

To power the scooter and get it running, you first need to press the accelerator, i.e., “thumb throttle” as you begin to push the scooter along. When the scooter gets to a particular speed, the motor automatically kicks in, and you’ll start to move effortlessly as you control the speed from the thumb-activated paddle control.

Ride quality is further enhanced by Razor’s patent-pending, anti-rattle technology, and adjustable-height handlebars to effectively adjust the scooter’s height based on the riders’ preferences.

Better still, the extra-wide extrusion profile aluminium deck is embedded with soft rubber prism-shaped grips for added stability and maximum comfort. The deck is also lowered to the ground to enhance stability, especially when negotiating sharp corners.

Overall, despite the lack of suspension, the E Prime Air manages to deliver a solid and smooth ride in standard urban terrains. Nonetheless, you’re likely to face some discomfort when riding on off-road or rough terrains.

Like most scooters in this range, the E Prime Air sports a dual braking system, i.e., a thumb-activated electronic front brake and a rear-fender controlled brake for additional braking power.

However, according to numerous complaints, the braking system isn’t powerful enough and doesn’t feel safe, putting riders at risk.

The Razor E Prime Air Electric scooter has a rugged, lightweight aluminium frame weighing only 21.5 pounds (9.8 Kg), much lighter than most entry-level scooters. With such a low weight, you can easily pick up and carry it from one place to another.

What’s more, the scooter folds down to a compact package that can effortlessly fit the back seat of a car or under a reasonably sized desk at work.

You can also easily carry the folded scooter up a flight of stairs or onto a bus or train. Better still, once folded, the scooter locks into position using the retractable kickstand; therefore, you don’t have to lean it against an object to prevent it from falling over.

In essence, the portable and foldable design makes the Razor E Prime Air Electric scooter great for commuting.

Unfortunately, the scooter lacks front and rear LED lights meaning it cannot be ridden at a night-a great disadvantage.

Is the Razor E Prime Air Value for Money?

Yes, of course.

Razor is a reputable scooter brand, and finding its sleekest model under £300  certainly offers great value for money.

Its elegant design, pretty powerful brushless motor, pneumatic front tire, and a perfect anti-rattle folding technology go to great lengths in justifying the price. With this scooter, you’re getting performance, comfort, and style under one roof.

Who is the Razor E Prime Air Suitable for?

The Razor E Prime Air scooter is perfect for both adults and teens with little scooter experience.

It’s suitable for commuting to work, running errands, or just riding around the neighbourhood or in a park for fun.

Summary of the Swagger 5 Elite

The Swagger 5 Elite Scooter is an excellent pick for your urban commutes.

It offers power, comfortable rides, portability, and extra features to streamline your daily commutes. The scooter is constructed with a lightweight, rugged aluminium frame capable of supporting riders up to 320 pounds (145 kilograms).

The shiny aluminium frame with red accents adds to its aesthetics giving it a modern look. In case you’re not a fan of shiny frames, you can choose the black option.

The Swagger 5 Elite Scooter is fitted with a 250W motor electric hub motor that propels the scooter to a top speed of 18 mph (29 Km/h), which is quite powerful compared to most scooters in the same price range.

Despite having a lower watt rating, the motor powers the scooter over inclines under 20 degrees. Despite the manufacturer’s claim of excellent hill-grade performance, users have complained that the scooter struggles on inclines as low as 10 degrees.

The scooter accelerates rather slowly to reach a top speed of 18 mph. It features three-speed modes enabling riders to select their preferred speed.

You can start with the first gear as you slowly cruise your neighbourhood, shift to the second gear on a busier track. And finally, engage the third gear to arrive at your destination fast.

The Swagger 5 Elite Scooter comes with a 216W/37V lithium-ion battery providing a decent range of up to 11 miles (17.7 Km). The range is, however, dependent on various factors, including speeds, weights, and terrains.

You can get a significantly higher range by riding on the lower-speed modes. The battery attains a full charge in 3.5 hours, allowing riders to charge on the go.

The Swagger 5 offers a reasonably decent ride quality. While it lacks a mechanical suspension, the combination of the rear honeycomb (airless) tyre and the pneumatic (air-filled) front tyres offer a smooth ride.

The rear tyre has an internal polyurethane honeycomb structure that functions as springs, absorbing impacts and providing a comfortable ride. The spacious rubberized standing deck, measuring 44.2 cm by 15.2 cm, ensures that riders are stable when riding, further enhancing the ride quality.

The Swagger 5 Elite scooter is highly portable, thanks to the lightweight structure and collapsible design.

It easily folds in three quick steps-you just need to rotate a safety plastic collar, then pull down on a lever. When folded, the scooter measures 114 cm by 43 cm by 48 cm and can easily fit underneath your office desk, next to you on the train or bus, in the boot of most cars, or any compact space.

Better still, the folded package weighs only 12Kg, meaning that most people can seamlessly carry it for short distances.

The Swagger 5 is safe to ride even in wet conditions thanks to the pneumatic front tyre, which offers sufficient traction even in wet conditions. The scooter also integrates a dual braking system encompassing front ABS e-brakes (regenerative) and a rear disc brake.

The dual braking system offers a braking distance of 4-5 meters in dry conditions. It’s also safe to ride at night owing to the forward-facing ultra-bright LED headlights mounted high on the stem, rear fender lights, and rear reflectors.

The Swagger 5 is a smart scooter coming with an iOS/Android App that can be linked to the scooter via Bluetooth.

The app allows you to monitor current speed and average speed as well as battery life. Using the app, you can track distance and time travelled, switch between the three gears, turn on/off cruise control and plan your route with GPS.

What’s more, the app also features a theft-deterrent lock mode. The integration of a dedicated app and Bluetooth connectivity makes the Swagger an ideal choice for tech-savvy scooter enthusiasts.

The scooter also features a sleek and luminous LED display screen placed at the centre of the handlebar.

The LED display provides several metrics, including battery life, speed, and Bluetooth pairing information. Other impressive highlights of the Swagger 5 include IPX4 rating and added accessories, i.e., kickstand and bell.

Who is the Swagger 5 Elite Suitable for?

The Swagtron Swagger 5 is perfect for commuters, and this is attributed to its power, decent range, high portability, and great top speed.

It also offers three-speed modes making it ideal for both experienced and novice scooter riders.

Summary of the MegaWheels S5

The MegaWheels S5 is a lucid electric scooter ideal for adults with some experience in riding scooters.

The scooter is constructed with high-quality materials and a clever design, for an impeccable finish. The frame is built with aircraft-grade aluminium, making it lightweight and sturdy. The scooter can accommodate riders weighing up to 260 lbs (110 Kg). Its charcoal-black colour with red strips gives it a chic vibe.

Unlike most entry-level and high-end scooters, the MegaWheels S5’s deck is raised, facilitating smooth navigation in bumpy terrains.

Rather than placing the battery underneath the deck, the S5’s battery is intelligently placed in the main square bar of the scooter, enabling it to achieve a sleek minimalist look.

Better still, the scooter has a height of 1.2 m, making it perfect for tall riders. Unfortunately, the height cannot be adjusted; therefore, short individuals may be uncomfortable riding the scooter.

The S5 features a 250W front-mounted hub motor providing decent torque and acceleration.

The motor propels the scooter to a top speed of 15.5 mph, conquering steep 20 degrees inclines with ease. The acceleration is reasonably fast, and you can reach the top speed within a short time.

The scooter has two-speed modes: Energy Saving Mode (6.25 mph-white light) and Sport Mode (15.5 mph-red light). The two-speed mode options allow riders to choose an ideal speed that they’re most comfortable with.

The S5 electric scooter comes with a high capacity 5800 mAh, 36V Lithium-ion LG battery with a decent travel range of up to 12.5 miles (20 Km) under optimum conditions.

The battery charges to full capacity in 3 hours which is quite short considering the long range. The scooter also integrates Smart Battery Management System extending the battery life to the maximum.

As such, the scooter’s battery has an average battery life of 2-4 years with 500-1000 charge and discharge cycles. This means that the battery can perform at high standards for a long time.

The MegaWheels S5 offers comfortable and safe rides.

It’s fitted with advanced 8.5″ shock-absorbing and anti-slip pneumatic tyres making the ride comfortable even on speed bumps or on rough surfaces.

Besides, thanks to its lightweight design, you can seamlessly jump up and down on pavements and enjoy a softer landing, all thanks to the pneumatic tyres.

Safety is paramount when riding e-scooters.

Stopping the MegaWheels S5 should not be a problem, thanks to the double braking system encompassing a rear disc brake and a front electric motor brake.

The two braking mechanisms work in combination to provide a smooth and precise stop. For even more braking power, you can easily adjust (tighten) the rear disc brake to make it more efficient.

The S5 comes with a 1W LED headlight and red tail light making it safe to ride at night.

The lights will keep you visible at night, with few reflectors around the scooter for enhanced visibility in the dark.

The scooter also features a mechanical bell allowing for ease of navigation, especially in crowded streets. What’s more, the scooter also comes with a LED display indicating the current speed, speed modes, and battery life.

Weighing only 28 lbs (12.7Kg) and a portable foldable design, the MegaWheels S5 is highly portable.

The scooter can be folded and released within 3 seconds. The folding mechanism is pretty straightforward. Simply unlock the front clamp on the bar and fold the handlebar to the rear fender to lock it in.

Once folded, the scooter becomes compact, measuring just 111 x 42 x 43 cm, and can easily be transported or stored without taking up much space.

Overall, the MegaWheels S5 is a decent commuting scooter with decent speed and performance.

However, it lacks some features found in other scooters within the same price range, including Mobile App support, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and waterproof rating.

Is the MegaWheels S5 Value for Money?

To some extent, the MegaWheels electric scooter offers value for money.

While it lacks some of the extra features found in scooters within its price range, the scooter is lightweight, fast, provides a robust ride, and with a long range. It’s cost-effective and packs plenty of useful features.

Who is the MegaWheels S5 Suitable for?

The MegaWheels S5 is a budget-friendly electric scooter suitable for college students, commuters, and individuals just getting started in the world of electric scooters.

red  Longer battery charging time of up to 6 hours

red  Minimal off-road functionality

red  Low ride quality at high speeds

Summary of the Hiboy S2

Featuring a considerable top speed, acceleration, and range, and not forgetting power, the Hiboy S2 is another excellent budget scooter worth your time and money.

The scooter employs a robust design encompassed in an all-metal frame and supporting a max rider weight of up to 260 lbs (118 Kg). The frame is constructed from aviation-grade aluminium alloy, making the scooter strong and durable.

However, it adds a bit of weight to the scooter weighing a whopping 29.5 lbs (13.4 Kg), which is slightly heavier than most scooters in the same price range.

The scooter has a streamlined and straightforward cockpit with rounded hand grips, a centred, intuitive LED display, and thumb controls on either side of the handlebar.

The stem also features a low-mounted headlight that functions to provide visibility at night. There’s also a mechanical bell on the right handlebar that comes in handy to provide an audible warning if you’re riding in crowded streets.

However, the cables are exposed, significantly limiting the neatness of the design.

In terms of performance, the S2 is powerful compared to the average budget scooter.

It comes with a 350W motor that accelerates the scooter to a top speed of 18.6 mph (30 km/h). The motor accelerates the scooter from 0 to 24 km/h in just 6.2 seconds. It’s also quite able to conquer 15 degrees hill climbs.

The scooters also integrate two different speed settings, i.e., Sport mode and Comfortable Mode.

The Comfortable mode caps the speed at 13 mph while the Sport mode allows for shorter, faster journeys maxing the speed at 19 mph. The two-speed modes can be seamlessly interchanged on the Hiboy S2 app. You also have the option to lock your desired speed in by using the cruise control function.

The S2 is fitted with a 36 V, 7.5 Ah Lithium-Ion battery, providing an extended range of 17 miles.

However, this range is achieved only in optimum conditions, and you should expect 12-15 miles in real-world use cases. The battery has a longer charging time and takes up to 6 hours to attain a full charge.

What’s more, it’s integrated with a smart battery management  feature that helps optimize the scooter’s performance while preserving the battery life. Better still, the scooter employs regenerative braking converting kinetic energy to electrical power, thus prolonging battery life.

The Hiboy S2 Electric Scooter offers a decent ride quality on typical urban roads.

The scooter comes with rear dual shock absorbers constructed with special alloy spring steel.

The shock absorber goes to great lengths to offer a smooth and comfortable ride. The ride quality is further enhanced by the shock-absorbing 8.5-inch honeycomb tyres, which soaks up the bumps facilitating a smooth ride.

While the scooter’s solid rubber tyres can’t match the pneumatic tyres in terms of providing comfort, they don’t require any maintenance, as they don’t suffer from regular punctures.

The deck is also fairly spacious, with grippy rubber matting ensuring comfortable, safe, and secure rides. It’s large enough to accommodate both feet comfortably; therefore, you don’t have to place your feet in an awkward position while riding this scooter.

The deck is also attached to a rear fender to deflect mud and dirt from flicking up and dirtying you.

However, despite having a rear shock absorber and 8.5-inch solid tyres, the S2’s ride quality at higher speeds is below average.

As you gradually increase the speed to 18.6 mph (30 km/h), the ride quality reduces since the low-quality rear dual shock absorber doesn’t offer as much cushioning as expected. Besides, the solid rubber tyres are narrow, limiting stability.

The S2 halts smoothly thanks to the integrated double braking system encompassing rear disc braking and front electronic braking.

To brake, you can activate both brakes using the brake lever on the right handlebar, or you can engage the electronic brake independently via the thumb control on the left handlebar.

However, it’s advisable not to rely on the electronic thumb brake alone since it doesn’t have sufficient power to bring you to a quick and complete halt. The scooter also has an incredible stopping distance of just 4.4 meters.

Despite being a little heavier than other scooters in this review, the Hiboy S2 is portable enough. It folds in three steps.

You only need to flip down the folding lever to fold, and a hook at the rear of the dashboard conveniently latches to a clasp on the rear fender for ease of carrying once folded.

The folded scooter package measures 114 cm long by 41 cm wide by 48 cm high and can conveniently fit compact spaces, including car boots, beneath subway seats and in closets. By employing the stem folding mechanism, the Hiboy S2 offers great portability.

The scooter comes with front, deck-embedded and rear lights providing outstanding visibility at night.

It also comes with a dedicated iOS/Android mobile app, i.e., Hiboy App and Bluetooth connectivity. The app allows you to switch between riding modes, custom acceleration brake response, lock the scooter and customize speed & cruise control.

The scooter is also water-resistant and comes with an optional seat attachment.

Is the Hiboy S2 Value for Money?

The Hiboy S2 delivers exceptional value considering its great build, decent performance, and additional features, including a dedicated mobile app and detachable seat option.

In fact, the scooter falls in the category of premium budget scooter. It’s the cheapest seat-electric scooter in the market today.

Who is the Hiboy S2 Suitable for?

The S2 is ideal for new riders who are learning the ropes around scooter riding.

It’s also perfect for teens starting with scooter riding, who especially need to stay safe at high speeds.

For commuting, the Hiboy S2 is a heavier option, but it’s still portable and compact. You can easily stash it in the back of your car, under the subway seat, or even in your closet.

Overall, the scooter is perfect for many scooterists since it can be customized by adjusting several metrics, including the suspension level, cruise control, braking strength, minimum speed for cruise control, and brake energy recovery level.

You can also choose between kick-start or zero start and install a seat for more comfortable riding.

Hiboy S2 Specs

  • Scooter Weight 29.5 lbs (13.4 Kg)

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that electric scooters are growing in popularity all across the globe.

E scooters are revolutionizing urban commuting, providing a hassle-free and comfortable means of transport.

Better still, they are environmentally friendly and help lower the carbon footprint of most cities. With a budget of less than £300, you can get a really good scooter for your joy cruises or to streamline your urban commute.

As you may have realized from the above review, the scooters in this range have almost similar features.

Therefore, your choice should be guided by your specific needs and preferences. The guiding principle here is that £300 will get you a scooter whose performance is worth the £300.

If they go overboard on one feature, it will be at the extreme expense of another, so beware of the compromises you are willing to make.

However, we’re all too glad that the day has dawned when £300 can get you a pretty decent electric scooter.
