Apollo Phantom: The Lowdown…

Apollo is a scooter brand that stands out from the crowd thanks to its unwavering standards in premium scooter design.

The company was founded in 2018 with the desire to create a scooter that met North American standards. The two founders, both self-proclaimed scooter geeks, knew that there was an opportunity to launch a product that would appeal to Canadian consumers.

They have designed durable, robust, and reliable scooters that have worked up a storm among scooter enthusiasts within three years.

Apollo scooters are built to perfection and are designed for people who are always on the go. What’s more, Apollo creates scooters that don’t just excel; from their impressive build quality to their industry-changing technology, they leave a legacy behind.

The legacy continues with the Apollo Phantom electric scooter, a premiere offering from the brand. The Phantom series is a replacement for the former Pro series.

The Apollo Phantom comes so highly revered because Apollo’s engineers took more than a year going back and forth between design, production, testing, and soliciting customer feedback before settling on the four iterations of the Phantom that we have in the market. And judging from the enthusiasm from the electric scooter community, Apollo got it right this time. The result is a scooter that takes the urban mobility experience up a notch.

With its flawless design and array of in-demand features, the Apollo Phantom scooter is one of the most sought-after electric scooters of 2021. The Phantom is a powerful, stylish electric scooter perfect for short and long rides over varied terrains.

The scooter is fast but does not compromise safety with its high-performance braking system. The scooter offers one of the most comfortable ride experiences thanks to dual pneumatic tyres and a quadruple suspension system coupled with front and rear swing arms.

Riders also seem to appreciate the HEX display that gives more rider stats than your standard LCD display, high-efficiency brushless motors, the robust Dynavolt battery, and the reinforced folding mechanism that eliminates stem wobble.

But don’t take our word for it. Read on to find if this scooter deserves all the buzz it is creating in the electric scooter world and if it is worth £1,520.86 ($2,099.00).

Apollo Phantom Summary

Apollo is the ultimate scooter brand. Its latest scooter, the Apollo Phantom, is a game-changer for electric mobility. The electric scooter has been put through rigorous testing, collecting feedback from both internal and external testers—the result: a scooter that is sure to please even the most discerning customer.

The intelligent scooter is the perfect combination of technology and design. With a futuristic body, cutting-edge technology and unparalleled performance, the scooter is making way for the next generation of electric scooters.

The Apollo Phantom is built from aviation-grade aluminium alloy to ensure that the scooter remains durable and survives the elements. The Phantom comes in black colour with silver accents, presenting an elegant yet edgy vibe. The scooter’s wiring is not neat, but Apollo intentionally allowed easy maintenance and parts replacement. The handlebars are ergonomically designed and feature loads of controls to give riders complete power over this beastly machine.

One of the stand out features in this scooter is the unique quadruple spring suspension system for optimal shock absorption on various track surfaces. The Phantom’s 10-inch, 3.25-inch wide pneumatic hybrid tyres also provide optimal traction and a smooth ride, ensuring you will be able to roll over bumps and cracks with ease.

Further, the Apollo Phantom comes with dual 1200 watt motors so that riders have the power to go faster up to the top speed of 38 mph (61 km/h). The Phantom motor delivers enough torque to conquer 25% inclines and gives the rider the option to ride in rugged terrain without losing power over rougher surfaces.

The scooter’s modular safety system is designed to adapt to the most rapidly advancing technologies with a high-mounted super bright headlight, signal lights, and brake lights. This ensures that the rider can see and be seen even at night. In addition, the scooter is equipped with dual mechanical brakes and regenerative braking. A different variation of the scooter comes with full Nutt hydraulic brakes options, with a regenerative brake function.

The Apollo Phantom has a 52V 23.4aH Dynavolt battery that packs a serious punch. This advanced battery provides riders with an impressive range of up to 40 miles (64km) per charge.

Other premium parts are seen in the form of the HEX display, the reinforced folding mechanism and the spacious deck with a dedicated footrest. Overall, you are getting a scooter that will not go out of style, disappoint you performance-wise, and one that will guarantee fun but safe rides.

Does this scooter deserve all this attention? Read on for a more detailed look at Apollo Phantom and its head-turning specifications.

Appolo Phantom electric scooter

Performance Overview

The Apollo Phantom is a high-performance scooter with an unprecedented scope of features and components. The Phantom is powered by dual 1200W rear and front hub brushless motors with 1,600W peak power (maximum instantaneous power) for a combined output of 3200W.

This scooter produces incredible torque to reach its manufacturer-cited top speed of 38 mph (61 km/h) in no time and scale inclines of up to 25 degrees effortlessly, making it an excellent choice for those who want to whiz past traffic or satisfy their adventurous spirit.

Real-world tests with an average weight rider on a relatively flat track show that the scooter can clock 39 mph (63 kp/h). The Apollo Phantom’s top speed is comparable to the Kaabo Mantis Pro, Nanrobot D5+, Apollo Pro and Dualtron Eagle Pro.

Additionally, while the manufacturer cites an impressive range of 40 miles (64 km) on a single charge under optimal conditions, the scooter achieved a tested range of under 29 miles (46 km) riding in normal city conditions.

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter has incredible acceleration; it can get from 0-20 mph in under 5 seconds. The Phantom scooter is equipped with a super-efficient brake system that delivers incredible braking power to complement the zippy acceleration. The scooter has an impressive braking distance of 8 ft/ 2.4 metres when slowing down from 15-0 mph (24-0 km/h).

Speed & Acceleration

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter has all the raw power needed to get you around as fast as possible, with dual 1200W motors that max out at 38mph. Additionally, the acceleration is unlike anything you’ve felt before. It’s strong but not overwhelming — so you can zip around corners at high speeds or jump off curbs without a care in the world.

That’s not all! The Apollo comes equipped with a thumb throttle for more responsive acceleration. The switch from trigger acceleration to thumb throttle is convenient, especially for long-distance travels and trips when you need precise power control.

    Top Speed

The scooter has a dual/single motor button, allowing riders to switch between using a single motor for agile but power conservative rides or utilising dual motors for an extra power boost. The scooter is also equipped with a cruise control feature- simply maintain a constant speed for 5 seconds, and the scooter automatically engages the function for a more comfortable ride experience.

The e-scooter features three different riding modes/ speed settings: Speed 1, Speed 2, and Speed 3. Each speed setting delivers a different maximum speed.

On Speed 1, the scooter reaches a top speed of 18 miles per hour, enabling the rider to navigate city streets and roads comfortably. When switched to Speed 2, the scooter clocks 28 mph, and on speed mode 3, the scooter harnesses the highest level of power, which does not limit the rider’s top speed.

As a precautionary measure, riders are warned not to downshift gears while riding as it may cause a strong braking force that could cause skidding or falling.

    Hill Climbing

The Phantom’s ability to tackle inclines of up to 25 degrees allows it to overcome minor hills and rough terrain without losing speed or power. However, factors like the rider’s weight, the terrain they are riding over, and the battery life have to be considered.

    Battery & Range

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter features an advanced 52V 23.4Ah Dynavolt battery that rocks one of the industry’s best combinations of power and energy density. The Dynavolt battery is refined and incredibly powerful — it features in most electric bikes and electric motorcycles today as the battery of choice.

The Apollo Phantom can travel up to a manufacturer-cited 40 miles per charge on conservative mode with this high capacity battery, delivering unparalleled range. On full power, expect a reduced range of up to 25 miles. However, riders should generally always expect to get 70% of the manufacturer-cited range as a rule of thumb.

The HEX display has a range estimator that will accurately inform you how far you can go with the remaining battery level based on your riding profile in the minutes preceding.

Unfortunately, the battery on this scooter takes a very long time to charge fully — around 12 hours. You can cut your charging time in half by using dual chargers or by upgrading (sold separately) to a fast charger.

However, take caution when using the fast charger as overusing it highly affects the battery’s longevity. In addition, with a regenerative braking system, the Phantom’s battery charges the instant you brake.

Apollo claims the battery has 500 charge cycles and so it will have an extended life compared to generic lithium batteries. As a bonus, the Apollo Phantom is equipped with a smart power management system that keeps the battery healthy by ensuring it doesn’t overcharge or cause an electrical fault.

The smart battery-charging system also prevents short-circuiting, discharging, and high temperatures. And that’s not all! The battery has a fuse that protects the battery pack from damage. The fuse automatically cuts off the current when it detects water in charging ports.

    Motor Configuration

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter is powered by dual 1200W motors enclosed in the rear and front wheel hub encasing. The combined output of 2400W puts this model among the higher-performance electric scooters in the market.

The motor has an instant maximum output of 3200W. These power levels can achieve top speeds of 38 mph (60 km/h) and haul a maximum load of 300 lbs (136 kgs).

The scooter’s powerful motors are fitted with heat sinks and encased in the hubs to control the temperature for an optimal riding experience. When the single motor function is engaged, the scooter defaults to riding on the rear motor. Two 25 Stomocore controllers power the motors.

      Construction & Quality

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter is the poster bike for city life: it is sleek, powerful, and stylish enough to be the centre of attention on any urban road. With a sleek, modern design, the two-wheeled scooter doesn’t look like your typical ride: its 10-inch air-filled tires add to its standout appearance, while the aluminium frame and deck are painted in a daring matte black colour with silver accents to add to its aesthetics.

The wiring is a little exposed to facilitate maintenance routines, which the riding community has well received. The features on the cockpit are also in plug and play style for the same purpose.

The scooter is made of a high-quality and incredibly sturdy aviation-grade aluminium alloy. The CNC manufacturing process ensures that the build quality is top-notch, which is why riders can confidently take each twist and turn on their commute without having to worry about a single thing.

With its double-layer aluminium frame, the scooter is an adventure on two wheels. The double reinforced stem can withstand wear and tear, making it perfect for riders who want to take their ride on light off-roads or go fast across rougher terrains. The handlebar on the other end features a single piece of metal.

Apollo’s in-house team of engineers spent countless hours working out the kinks in their folding mechanism. They wanted to create a locking mechanism that was both reliable and durable yet easy to use. In doing so, they made sure to optimise their three-folding mechanism that also prevents stem wobble properly.

The stem features a hook that locks to the footrest when folded, and it can be used as a bag holder. The braking levers on either handlebar ends resemble those of a standard bike.

The scooter features a spacious deck with a footrest to make standing and balancing easier and more feasible while riding it. The surface is rubberised, just like the scooters handle grips, to ensure stability when riding. The scooter has a kickstand, which carries the only flaw in an otherwise brilliant design. The scooter leans too much when parked, and when folded, it sticks out a little more than usual.

Overall, the Apollo team has put the Phantom scooter through a rigorous quality control process, testing it internally and with external testers to ensure riders receive a scooter in its own class.

      Suspension & Comfort

Apollo’s Phantom electric scooter is designed to be more comfortable and stable than other personal mobility vehicles, thanks to its unique 45 degrees downward-facing quadruple spring suspension.

The dual springs on the front and rear are adjustable and can be fine-tuned according to the riding terrain. Further, the scooter is also equipped with front and rear swing arms that increase the rider’s comfort and also achieve the perfect cornering capabilities no matter the terrain.

      Ride Quality

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter is a beast on the road, and it is equally impressive off the asphalt. With impressive 10-inch pneumatic tyres, the Apollo Phantom delivers an excellent balance between speed and comfort.

The tyres facilitate a comfortable ride by absorbing road impacts and vibrations. The unique quadruple spring suspension is further facilitated by the ride quality (the first in the electric scooter industry). The suspension system can be adjusted to your riding style, weight or track conditions. A front further supports the scooter and rear swingarm, providing even smoother rides across all terrains.

The wide, ergonomic handlebars make it easy to take control of the scooter. The spacious deck gives you ample room to get situated when riding, while the high handlebar to deck ratio allows riders of different heights to enjoy a comfortable ride. Even better is the dedicated footrest that not only extends the standing real estate but allows riders to assume a comfortable resting position.

Additionally, whether you are cruising around casually or racing towards your destination, the steady and responsive brakes do a great job of pulling up the scooter instantly.

Apollo has fitted this scooter with one of the best lighting systems ever seen on a commuter scooter for night rides. The IP54 water resistance makes the scooter a year-round scooter. And with cruise control, riders can take their hands off the throttle on longer rides for smooth sailing to their destinations.

      Lights

Quality lights come standard with the Apollo Phantom, and it is the only brand in its category that features a stem mounted, never-fade premium LED headlight.

The glaring 1000W lumen front headlight helps you see every aspect of the road, letting you ride safely even when there aren’t streetlights. In addition to the powerful headlight, the deck is outfitted with two front, and two rear LED lights and a dedicated brake light that blinks when you pull the brake levers.

The scooters lighting system, including the integrated rear turn signals, can be operated from the control pad on the left side of the handlebars.

To add a touch of class and safety, the scooter comes with sophisticated rear indicator lights. A simple tap on the left side of the handlebars activates the light, making your turns unmistakably clear to the drivers around you. When you activate the turn signals and the headlight, it shows on the HEX display.

      Braking

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter has a lot of speed and power packed in its tiny frame. That is why Apollo equipped it with some serious stopping power — you will never have to worry about losing control while cruising at top speeds. Different variations of this scooter are defined by the braking system the rider opts for.

The first one is equipped with an effective braking system that combines dual mechanical disc brakes and a regenerative brake. This provides a greater degree of control and safety.

The alternative scooter comes equipped with full hydraulic disc brakes plus regenerative brakes, but this option is significantly more expensive than the standard mechanical ones.

The Nutt Hydraulic brakes variation equips the scooter with a more responsive braking force than the mechanical disc brakes. On the bright side, users can customise the strength of the electronic brakes using the P settings, with the lowest strength being 0 and the strongest one at 3.

What’s more, the disc size on the Apollo Phantom’s wheels is significantly larger, measuring 160 mm in size as opposed to most electric scooters that measure 140mm. This facilitates more efficient braking and better cooling performance.

The right brake lever controls the front brake while the left brake lever controls the rear. It is recommended to apply the brakes simultaneously to prolong the lifespan of the brakes and avoid overexertion of one over the other.

      Portability

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter is not portable. Unfortunately, when carrying the Phantom around on your shoulder or under your arm, it can get pretty heavy at 35 kg (77 lbs). To make up for the scooter’s weight, its designers equipped it with an ingenious folding mechanism.

The folding mechanism on the scooter is solid, sturdy, and relatively straightforward. The stem latches on the footrest, making it comfortable (though heavy) to lift and carry. The cut section on the footrest allows for ease when loading into a car trunk. The handlebar width makes storing the scooter cumbersome- Apollo could maybe equip this scooter with the Ghost’s folding handlebar mechanism.

However, the reinforced folding design with three independent safety mechanisms goes to great length to prevent stem wobble- it features a safety pin to keep the stem in place, a plastic latch as a secondary protective measure against accidental folding and the actual folding latch.

      Tyres

Apollo Phantom’s tyres are specifically designed for this model, offering 3.25 inches of width and 10 inches of diameter. The result is a tyre that feels like the perfect middle ground between stability and nimbleness, meaning you can have confidence, whether you are riding on light off-roads or through your neighbourhood streets. The tyres tread patterns provide a grippy surface that keeps riders stable when riding the scooter over pebbles or cracks.

The air-filled pneumatic tyres help absorb the impact of bumps on the road. They cushion impacts and reduce vibrations, ensuring that you enjoy a smooth and stable ride compared to solid tires. However, pneumatic tyres are susceptible to punctures, unlike solid tyres. You can purchase tyre sealant to reduce the instances of a puncture. What’s more, the Phantom’s tyres feature split rims for easier maintenance.

Apollo calls the tyres hybrid, meaning road conditions don’t limit them — they can be ridden on paved and unpaved surfaces.

      Deck

The deck on the Apollo Phantom Electric Scooter is designed for comfort and stability. It features a large 8.5 by a 20-inch deck that provides ample space and stability. It also features an angled footrest for greater comfort and added usable space.

The scooter also has an excellent ground clearance of 7″, which means it can tackle the occasional rock or curb without scratching the undercarriage and its battery. Its deck is also covered in texturised silicone rubber, which provides extra grip for riders looking to ride off-road.

      Controls & Display

The Apollo Phantom electric scooter has the largest electric scooter display- the unique proprietary HEX display sitting at the centre of the handlebars. The display shows metrics (km/h, mph), turn signal arrow, kick-to-start function, light status (on/off), battery voltage and expected mileage, cruise control, trip mileage and speed display.

The Apollo Phantom has a wholly redesigned handlebar that provides a cleaner, more focused user experience. By replacing the trigger-style controls with a thumb throttle and button pads, the scooter is more intuitive to ride — with all of the control functions within easy reach.

The handlebars on this scooter have earned a perfect five stars in width and grip, providing a balanced, comfortable ride that will prevent your wrists from tiring out.

The brake levers are on either side of the handlebar, with the right operating the front and the left operating the rear. A smooth-to-the-touch button pad dominates the right side of the machine with integrated power and mode buttons.

Two additional buttons let you scroll through the scooter’s different P-settings and are easy to reach and operate, even when you have gloves on. Last but not least, you’ll find the key-lock ignition (a safety feature that will keep unauthorised users from starting your scooter) and the ergonomic thumb-activated control.

The other control pad sits on the left side of the handlebar, and it lets you control the headlight and turn signals. Additionally, a second button activates Sport Mode, which allows both motors to engage at full power. The bell switch is also right-located.

      Water Resistance

The Apollo Phantom Electric Scooter can withstand water from all angles, even though you shouldn’t submerge it in water.

The IP54 rating means that it can handle water droplets or light showers without issue. Dry the scooter off the instant you get to shelter as the scooter is not waterproof, and the electronic components are susceptible to water damage.

      Reliability

The Apollo is one of the most, if not the ultimate reliable electric scooters in the market. The scooter checks on all in-demand scooter features across all categories. The scooter is fast and will carry you through your long journeys without the need to recharge.

The Apollo Phantom is durably built, with a frame that can withstand rough use- it can also withstand exposure to the varying elements. Whether you’re cruising on paved urban terrain or exploring light off-roads, you will get fantastic ride quality on the Phantom.

The scooter is constructed with premium quality parts that allow easy maintenance, and replacements are readily available. Most importantly, the scooter ranks high in safety with the top-notch lighting and uncompromised braking system. The Apollo Phantom truly lives up to its glowing reviews.

      Warranty

A 12-month warranty covers the Apollo Phantom electric scooter for any manufacturing defect on the stem, frame, handlebar, battery, throttle and electrical parts.

If anything goes wrong with the scooter within 12 months, the manufacturer will replace it at no extra charge. Apollo also offers a 30-day/ 10 km warranty for the braking system, rims, forks, and kickstand.

Apollo is committed to providing the best customer experience, from delivering first-class support to resolving issues in real-time. Available from 9 AM to 5 PM EST, the Canadian-based team will respond promptly to your queries. Reaching out for help is easy through the website’s live chat feature. Furthermore, all orders ship free within Canada and the USA.

      Known Issues

Apollo electric scooters fall short of Bluetooth compatibility. It does not seem to work, despite Apollo indicating that it does.

Some users have complained that the kickstand sticks out too much when folded.

      Maintenance

The Apollo Phantom Electric Scooter is the most advanced and reliable scooter on the market. This scooter is built to last, but it may need occasional repairs and maintenance, which are easy to perform at home or by a professional mechanic. The user manual outlines the maintenance procedure. Apollo supplies a maintenance kit with tools that you will require to keep the scooter well maintained. Maintenance practices include:

      • Vacuuming the deck and wiping down the body with a microfiber cloth will make sure that the scooter keeps looking good and running well for years to come.
      • If the scooter is kept in inclement weather, such as rain or snow, it should be dried immediately and cleaned before being stored away.
      • Be sure to tighten nuts and bolts regularly to preserve the overall condition of the scooter.
      • Check the pneumatic tyres and ensure they are correctly inflated, considering the recommended PSI of 50.
      •  Charge the e scooter using the manufacturer recommended charger and within the stipulated charging time. DON’T use the quick charger together with the regular charger. Use two standard chargers or a single quick charger if you want your scooter to charge fast.
      • Adjust the brakes regularly and check for wear on the brake pads
      • Lubrication of the scooter’s bearings and the moving parts on the suspension
